SurfAid International - PD Heart

SurfAid International is a non-profit organization dedicated to the alleviation of human suffering through community-based health programs and Emergency preparedness program. We perform our work in isolated regions connected to us through surfing.

The successful candidate will possess the following attributes:

The Consultants are needed in assisting the field staffs in conducting PD Inquiry while independently conducting PD where later recommending to Training Unit for Hearth Sessions. Considering the project locations in Mentawai and Nias with 2 weeks different in implementation, 2 consultants are necessary in order to cover all villages and provide data for Hearth.

II. Purpose

Assisting field staffs in implementing PD Hearth in community, Conduct PD Inquiry by using PD approach and collect qualitative information regarding community perceptions and beliefs about malnutrition, identify PD family practice adopted to reduce malnutrition (related with feeding, caring, health seeking and hygiene personal practice)
Provide recommendation for HEARTH implementation especially design for menus, health messages, protocols, etc Developing monitoring tools for HEARTH Develop HEARTH training curriculum for staff and volunteers

Nias
in all villages of project located

Mentawai
in all villages of project located


IV. Period of Implementation

The consultancy will include 63 days of work to take place during the timeframe 23 June 2008 to 23 August 2008 including coordination meeting with management both senior level and program level, preparatory work and submission of report.


The detail of workload for both island are;

1 week coordination meeting with senior management and program management with Training Unit.
3 weeks in Nias for assisting field staff in running PD and in the same time conducting independent research of PD.
1 week of working collaboration with Training Unit based on recommendation to program management as the result of PD research including involve in training session of Hearth Intervention Cycle.
2 weeks in Mentawai for assisting field staff in running PD and in the same time conducting independent research of PD.
1 week of working collaboration with Training Unit based on recommendation to program management as the result of PD research including involve in training session of Hearth Intervention Cycle.
1 week preparing and submitting final report for both Nias and Mentawai.


V. Tasks and Proposed Schedule of Activities

Conduct meeting with SAI management and key staff;
clarify expectation and desired outcomes, review and confirm activity and logistics plan, etc Using PD approach and collect qualitative information regarding; community perceptions and beliefs about malnutrition, identify PD family practice adopted to reduce malnutrition (related with feeding, caring, health seeking and hygiene personal practice) Using PD inquiry result and analysis to provide recommendation for HEARTH implementation especially design for menus, health messages, protocols, etc Developing monitoring tools for HEARTH Working with training unit to develop HEARTH training curriculum for staff and volunteersAssisting field staffs in implementing PD Hearth in community.


Criteria

· Relevant University Degree in Public Health/Epidemiology / Nutrition or equivalent
. Previous experience of assessment of Positive Deviance Approach of Hearth Model
. Previous experience in health/nutrition assessment through qualitative approach
. Ability to think structurally and to work independently Flexibility Computer literacy



Desired:

Knowledge of the cultural, social, and ethnic background of Indonesia (Nias and Mentawai).
