Canadian Red Cross - Radio Operator

The Canadian Red Cross is implementing a major community-based reconstruction and rehabilitation program with the primary focus on shelter construction project in Aceh Besar, Lamno, Calang and Nias for beneficiaries affected by Tsunami of December 26, 2004 and earthquake of March 28, 2005. We are also implementing Livelihoods, Environmental Health and Disaster Preparedness Management programs to help families
and communities to improve their live quality. We are looking for a qualified and committed candidate to fill the following position on a fixed term contract basis.

Radio Operator (Ref. Code : NIAS-RO), 1 position
Based in Lahewa, Nias

Purpose of the Post:
The Radio Operator will operate the telecommunications systems for the CRC/ IFRC Delegation in Nias and train staff in the skills if required.

Main Responsibilities:
· Monitor, keep track and provide guidance in safety and security issues on the way to the field, vehicles of IFRC/ CRC using HF/ VHF /Satellite phones and other Telecom system.
· Prepare & submit daily report of Lahewa, Nias radio room to Logistics Delegate
· Assist IFRC/ CRC staff members in case of an accident including dealing with police stations/ IFRC if required.
· Monitor news/ updates of natural disaster/ weather warnings/ Earth Quakes/ Tsunami warnings from international and local sources and inform to relevant persons. i.e: Head of IFRC sub Delegation, Head of CRC Sub Office, Logistics Coordinator etc.
· Establishing communication with IFRC/ CRC - Banda Aceh, Gunung Sitoli, field base camps, mobile vehicles and monitor the entire network for harmful interference, ensue that IFRC/ CRC Telecom protocols are followed appropriately.
· Maintain safe and secure environment in the radio room and ensure the unctionality of the Telecom equipments at all times.
· File all incoming and outgoing messages appropriately in the log sheet.
· Train the staffs in using the radios according to the IFRC/ CRC radio communication procedure as and when required.
· Assist the delegation with the installation, maintenance and upgrade of Telecommunications systems.
· Responsible for custody of all radio communication equipments and related log books that belong to the delegation
· Establish and ensure effective working relationships with the delegation staff and other organizations who are working in the area.

Competencies and Skills Required for the Post:
· Good oral and written English
· Experience of using VHF, HF, email and satellite communication
· Experience of installing, maintaining & repairing VHF/HF radios
· Professional Qualification in Radio telecommunications, specializing in VHF, HF and Data Transmission systems
· Excellent Computer Skills (In Windows XP and Ms Office packages)
· Monitoring, management and control; communication and networking
